We were tasked with analysing our dérive experience in the form of a question, before embarking on individual projects to exhibit our findings in a classroom environment. The synergy between people and city creates a certain flow. As we go about on our daily commute, we seem content to hand over control to this flow— drifting along the streets and alleyways of the city.In this project I attempt to identify, analyse and compare the traits of the city and that of a river from recollections of the derive.What drifts along with the current? In the first week, we explored the circle. A circle is infinity, yet is a singularity. Scattered in numbers, the circles are but random arrangements of shapes in space. There is an infinite amount of possibilities in the lines that could join to and from each circle. Once lines are drawn, the arrangement of circles is contextualised. They are no longer a random cluster, but are defined by the lines that join them together. The infinite amount of possibilities disappear, leading to one conclusive outcome: a singularity. In contrast to the open nature of the first week, this week we were tasked to creating a 20 page A5 publication using 20 given words. A universe is crafted with these twenty pages; each page a world constructed with words and shapes, confined within the boundaries of a box. The words are foundations laid for worlds to be built; its concrete structure contextualising each page. The shapes are stimulus for emotional response; its shapes and colours echoing the nuance of emotions each world embodies. The inherent human fixation on perfection is explored through the simple metaphor of shapes. It presents the shapes as perfection, sought after as a paragon by humankind. The shapes are the embodiment of the visual ideals we attempt to exercise in what we create. However, it is the nature of ideals to remain unattainable, much like mirages in the desert. Its elusive quality is reflected in the presentation of the project, with the shapes screen-printed on various mediums and in translucent ink; and finally, a printed box, revealed to be empty after layers of paper are peeled away. We chose to organise the lay summary on 3 different platform: the web, physical publication and AR. My role in this project was centred on the publication. I chose to incorporate tactile devices which allows the audience to interact with the piece in a very hands-on manner, facilitating an effective engagement with information. As I did not want to overwhelm the reader, I chose to split the 100 pages into 5 booklets, each booklet 20 pages. The number of posts we ‘liked’. Places where we left fingerprints on. Pictures we took as a reminder with the smartphone. These seemingly different actions all fall under the umbrella of unforeseen acts of publishing. What interests me is the casual intimacy these published material. They are not for the purpose of display; rather, they behave much like notes, acting as a personal reminders waiting to be checked on should the need ever arise. The challenge was to ‘activate’ these findings and integrate them into engaging outcomes. Cleaning is an inherent part of daily life. It is a highly personal instrument that is tightly intertwined with our habits and unconscious tendencies.&nbsp; The project centres around investigations and observing the act of cleaning in parallel with the act of being human through 3 different mechanisms: Speak, Human , and Objects. Speak originated from the thought of cleaning as a primarily solitary and private act. Human [Behaviour] explores the thought of cleaning being a personal and unique act to each individual. Objects [Vestige] looks at the act of cleaning from a slightly different angle: from the tools and objects that surround the act. I decided to use my experience of cooking alone while study abroad as a starting point. For me, solitary cooking isa fairly bland part of routine when the mind wanders blindly. The lack of presence that permeates the air when dining alone leaves voids that need to be filled; be it films, social media, or music. “Solace cooking” is a hypothetical interaction that aims to channel the wandering attention and detachment that comes with solitary cooking in an exaggerated manner.
